Special education certification can offer you a lot of new experiences, and if you are an intelligent, hard working individual, then earning certification should not be impossible, but is this the right career choice for you?
It Has to Be a Passion
Many in the special education field have handicapped people in their families. The reason for this should be obvious. If you are not passionate about special education, then it is not the job for you. It cannot be just a way to make money. If all you want is to make a decent living, try becoming a manager at a local grocery store. It pays about as much.
No, special education is for people who are passionate about helping those with learning disabilities learn to function in daily life, learn to make the most of their lives and learn for the fun of learning. If you cannot see yourself working with specially abled people in order to help them reach their full potential, then this is not the job for you.
It Will Try Your Patience
No matter how passionate you are, there will be times when the job frustrates you. Dealing with people who all have special needs is not the easiest job in the world. This is why you need to be passionate. But even if you are passionate, you need to be patient and understanding and caring, as well.
It is Unpredictable
There are special education colleges online that will help you with all of the technical aspects that you need to learn in order to become a special educator. However, these cannot possibly teach you everything you need to know. The specially abled are individuals, as unique as you are from any random person in the world. If all of the differently abled suffered the same handicaps, experienced the same strengths and weaknesses, then really, there would hardly even be a need for special educators.
It Requires Special Training
Earning special education certification, if you already have a bachelors in education, might not take too long, but if you are just now pursuing an education in teaching, know that you will need to spend anywhere from one to two years studying special education. In some states, this studying can be done concurrently with your training to teach, but others may require that you have a bachelors before you can pursue special education.
It is Rewarding
People who have disabilities are often forgotten about and ignored by the world at large. Giving these people your full attention, helping them find and pursue their own purpose in life can be one of the greatest, most rewarding feelings in the world, and for many special educators, it’s more than worth it.
