WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

Welcome to the Paramedic Academy

Since its emergence as a profession in the early 1970s, the profession of Paramedicine has evolved rapidly. This trend has recently taken a new twist. Innovative deployments of paramedics in settings other than the traditional ambulance paramedic role are beginning to emerge and create expanded, innovative, roles for graduates of paramedic training programs.

In addition to paramedic careers, graduates are using their JIBC credential to launch into other health care careers. Clinical experience gained in part from training and experience working as a paramedic builds a solid basis upon which to inform career decisions within health care. Graduates of our programs have moved on to medical schools, nursing programs and several other health care fields.

The Paramedic Academy is committed to building and supporting innovative training programs that shape both traditional and emerging career paths. Within these pages you will find the latest in both paramedic certification programs and supporting programs to help you maintain or grow your career in pre-hospital care.

Impacting lives. Starting with yours.

News and Events: New Options for Emergency Medical Responder Classes

The Paramedic Academy is introducing a new part-time model for the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course, and a Vancouver location for full-time EMR classes.

The new Part-time Alternative format allows students to attend an EMR class on three weeknights and one Saturday for six weeks.  The next class starts September 29 at the Justice Institute of BC New Westminster campus.  (For more information, see EMR course structure.)

Full-time EMR classes are also available at the JIBC’s Great Northern Way Campus located at 555 Great Northern Way, Vancouver.  EMR classes in Vancouver are scheduled on Sept. 15-Oct. 3, 2008, Nov. 24 –Dec. 12, 2008, and Feb. 2-20, 2009 (registration information).

The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification course is an entry-level medical responder course that prepares individuals for employment in a variety of pre-hospital, industrial and first responder settings. The EMR course provides participants with the basic knowledge and skills to be able to manage any medical and trauma related emergency. The EMR course offered by the Paramedic Academy includes CPR Level ‘C’ certification, and meets one of the mandatory requirements for admission to the Primary Care Paramedic Program.
